Malaysian plane with 295 on board crashes in Ukraine


GRABOVE: A Malaysian airliner carrying 295 people from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed on Thursday in rebel-held east Ukraine, as Kiev said the jet was shot down in a �terrorist� attack.

Ukraine�s government and pro-Russian insurgents traded blame for the disaster, with comments attributed to a rebel commander suggesting his men may have downed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 by mistake, believing it was a Ukrainian army transport plane.

Four-day Eid holiday


ISLAMABAD: The federal government has announced Eidul Fitr holidays from July 29 to Aug 1 [Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday].

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Interior on Thursday.

Stocks hit all-time high

KARACHI: The booming Karachi stock market saw the KSE-100 index cross the coveted 30,000 points mark on Thursday � the highest ever in the bourse�s history.

Market gurus said that the index flight to the north was triggered by an increase in Pakistan�s weight in MSCI Frontier market index and upgrade of its economy this week to �stable� from �negative� by global rating agency Moody�s.

�Militants� den near Raiwind smashed

LAHORE: Two suspected terrorists and an official of an intelligence agency were killed and four others, including a military officer, injured during an operation after security forces raided a house near Raiwind Road in the small hours of Thursday to capture some suspects.

The incident took place a couple of kilometres from the Jati Umra residence of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. This fact prompted some provincial ministers and police officers to conjecture that the suspects were plotting an attack on Jati Umra. The suspects, including a woman, were living in the rented house for about two months.

Four boys killed in Hangu explosion

KOHAT: Four children were killed and three others injured when a bomb exploded in Darobi Banda area of Hangu district on Thursday.

Police said the boys aged between 10 and 12 years were grazing cattle along Kahi road when the bomb went off at about 10.40am, killing Shafiullah, Zahidullah, Mohammad Irshad and Mohammad Hussain on the spot.

Humanitarian truce in Gaza holds


GAZA: Palestinians rushed to shops and banks on Thursday during a five-hour humanitarian ceasefire that largely held, and an Israeli official said Egypt had proposed a permanent truce that would start on Friday.

But there was uncertainty about prospects for a full cessation of violence after the temporary truce lapsed.

SC moved for initiating contempt proceedings against Imran

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has been dragged into the Supreme Court by two lawyers for ridiculing in his media outburst the apex court, particularly former chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

The petitioners � Islamabad Bar Association�s President Naseer Ahmad Kayani and General Secretary Chaudhry M. Naeem Ali Gujar � have requested the court to initiate contempt proceedings against Mr Khan under Article 204 of the Constitution for �abusing, scandalising, ridiculing and bringing disrespect and hatred to the Supreme Court and the former chief justice�.
