Asif invokes God�s help over power crisis

ISLAMABAD: Conceding that the country had been in grip of the worst-ever electricity crisis over the past three days, Water and Power Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif apologised to the nation on Monday and expressed the hope that the God Almighty would bestow some relief in about two days and there would be a drop in temperatures.

Three new polio cases reported

ISLAMABAD: The National Institute of Health has said that three confirmed cases of polio have been reported from Khyber Agency, taking the number of victims of the deadly disease to 91 in six and a half months of this year. Last year�s total polio count was 93.

The three have been identified as Sumbul, daughter of Waris Khan of Akakhel in tehsil Bara; Samran, daughter of Khan Alam of Shah Dalay village, also of tehsil Bara; and Ibrahim, son of Shakeel of Kanday Mirankhel village in the same tehsil. Two of them are facing the attack of paralysis.

Zardari slams govt over IDPs issue, urges it to seek world help

ISLAMABAD: PPP Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari has accused the government of having adopted a �callous attitude� to the people displaced by the military operation against militants in North Waziristan Agency, and urged it to gear up relief efforts on war footing.

�The internally displaced persons (IDPs) are our national heroes in the �war against terror� and neglecting them in this hour of trial is a criminal and callous act that will not be condoned under any circumstances,� he said in a statement on Monday.

Evacuation of Mamond villages ordered

KHAR: The political administration of Bajaur Agency has ordered people living in border areas of Mamond tehsil to evacuate their homes by Tuesday morning because of the possibility of a military operation in the region.

Local people told Dawn on Monday that the administration had asked residents of five border villages of Mamond to leave the area.

Out in the green fields, a group of policemen takes shelter from the midday heat under a mulberry tree. Others are scattered across the terrain with its dry water channels, graveyards and settlements.

This afternoon, DSP Abidur Rehman misses his prayers for a last-minute inspection of the policemen posted across the Sulaimankhel area in Peshawar�s precincts. Any minute now, the corps commander, Peshawar, is to fly over, tracing the landing flight path at Peshawar�s Bacha Khan International Airport to inspect if it is properly guarded by the policemen.

Israeli shelling continues despite calls for truce


GAZA: Israel kept up its air and naval bombardments of the Gaza Strip despite growing international pressure on Tel Aviv for a ceasefire, and Palestinian militants resumed rocket attacks on the Israeli capital after a 24-hour lull.

The military said it had shot down a drone from Gaza, the first reported deployment of an unmanned aircraft by Palestinian militants whose rocket attacks have been regularly intercepted.
