Parties wary of PTI protest call

By Amir Wasim

ISLAMABAD: A plan by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) to launch a street campaign from May 11 is being viewed with suspicion by most of the major political parties, and even its coalition partner in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government seems reluctant to join it.

They consider Imran Khan’s decision to launch the campaign against the alleged rigging in the last year’s elections ill-timed and suspect there is a hidden agenda behind it.

PML-N yet to outlaw any terror group

By Khawar Ghumman

ISLAMABAD: Despite the recent emergence of previously unheard of militant organisations which have claimed credit for terrorist attacks, the PML-N government has not banned a single one since coming to power.

In fact, no organisation has been banned since the PPP-led government’s tenure ended. The last time any such exercise was carried out was in March last year when the PPP government outlawed 14 organisations.

Gwadar: on the cusp of greatness?

By Naziha Syed Ali

GWADAR: The Pearl Continental Gwadar, located on the hammerhead that defines this coastal town in southern Balochistan, is deserted on most days. Only a few of the hotel’s 114 rooms are being kept operational; instead of central air-conditioning, split ACs are in place; the shrubbery outside needs some attention. Cost-cutting measures are clearly in place.

And yet, the building is well lit and inviting, the smell of freshly polished furniture lingers in the corridors, at least some of the rooms that are still open are luxurious and well maintained, and the staff is eager to show you around.

PML-N gives new lease of life to tax exemptions

By Mubarak Zeb Khan

ISLAMABAD: Like previous governments, the PML-N government has promoted the culture of tax exemptions and issued over 80 orders to reportedly benefit influential people in the first nine months (July to March) of the current financial year.

Soon after coming to power, the PML-N government had constituted a committee to review implications of the statutory regulatory orders (SROs) issued by the previous governments.

HIDE AND SEEK

By Shazia Hasan

“IS this live?” “Yes, Shukar Allah, they are all live!” says Mohammad Ali Arabi, chairman of Hassan Centre in Karachi’s Saddar. He is sitting in his car, watching the goings-on at his shops on his iPhone.

“I can also watch my businesses from outside the country. I do that often now that I have had surveillance cameras fixed everywhere,” he explains. “In fact, I have also put in motion sensors and pyro-sensors in my house. That way we don’t even have to be at home and the gate and lawn lights will switch on and off by themselves.
